I'm with flux and have finished soldering the MIDIpal, but there is something wrong because my old steam punk RS-232 AVRISP can't seem to program the ATMega328p. Will have to do some continuity testing to find some clue to what can be wrong. First impressions after building a whole SMT/SMD thing is that it is fairly easy but a bit slower than THM. But with good light, magnification and a lot of flux it's quite doable and a satisfying experience. We'll see if I'm as pleased after I find what is wrong...
